Lucid Pictures

From daily posts about cinema and Hollywood to a viral short film

Lucid Pictures was my first-ever film project. It began during the pandemic as a way for me to share how I understand and love cinema, through daily Facebook posts to friends reflecting on Hollywood and film history. I collaborated with fellow artists to design 20 social media posts and created a space that eventually became the platform where I streamed my very first short film, made back in high school.

  1. The evolution of cinema on screen

For my first video on the page, I traced how the cinema frame evolved from 1896 to 2020, including sound, color, motion, and frame. I asked two close friends of mine to choreograph a 20-second dance, filming them as the years ticked by, letting the shifts in style and feel unfold.

  1. The Kuleshov Effect

The Kuleshov Effect, demonstrated by Soviet filmmaker Lev Kuleshov in 1921, shows how meaning is created through editing. By simply rearranging the order of shots, filmmakers become visual magicians, shaping how audiences interpret emotions and intent. In this film, reordering the same footage can transform the main character into a romantic lover or an unsettling stalker.

  1. Posters about the history of Hollywood

Through the first phase, followers got a deeper look into Hollywood’s history and filmmaking techniques from 1896 to today. Creating these posts was genuinely fun, and the energy and support from our audience kept pushing us forward.

  1. The Short Film

The second phase of the project was about "Chapters of You" - a short film I wrote, produced and directed. The story was inspired by a personal experience at the age of 14 - navigating my sexuality while sitting in a space full of ambiguity.

The story follows Ha, a high school teenager living life with her best friend, Ly. As their bond deepens, Ha found herself developing a strange emotion for Ly that she could not define by words. Ha then faced an unprecedented truth about her identity that reshapes how she sees herself and her future.
